Art

Our school vision

"This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118

Our curriculum vision for Art - Our Intent

At Finchampstead we believe that Art, Craft and Design should have no boundaries as it can embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. We want art to fire the children’s imagination and provide a wealth of experiences in a wide range of medium. As Quentin Blake said, ‘Art is not just a subject to learn, but an activity that you can practise with your hands, your eyes, your whole personality’

We want our children to have bountiful opportunity to express themselves through the power of art: to learn about famous artists and experience all mediums, in order to produce exciting and imaginative creations. No sketch is too small, no sculpture too big and we always ensure we timetable weekly art sessions and facilitate whole school art projects.

As our pupils progress, they will be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They will also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Our EYFS/KS1 pupils will be given opportunity to;

  • use a range of materials creatively to design and make products

  • use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination

  • develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space

  • think about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.

Our KS 2 Pupils will be given opportunity to;

  • create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas

  • improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]

  • Think about great artists, architects and designers in history.
