Autumn 2025: It's All Greek to Me!
Shifting shadows and spectacular spectrums: Goldfinch class have been investigating the variables that affect the size of a shadow. They learnt about refraction with a glass prism.
English: we investigated the amazing descriptions Maz Evans used in her writing to help us write our own character descriptions.
Maths: using place value counters is a great tool to help us to learn to partition large numbers. We can really see how exchanging happens.
Summer 2025: One World to Share
We were happy to welcome parents to our maths information evening where we shared how the children learn methods for multiplication and division in year 5 and 6. If you weren't able to make the evening, there are some useful short video demonstrations on the links below:
DT: The World on our Plate. We investigated the global impact of our food and seasonality. Practising chopping, dicing, grating and slicing helped us to make delicious guacamole, salsa and quesadillas.
Geography- We were lucky enough to have Mrs Arlon visit Goldfinch class today to share her knowledge about chocolate and even help us make our own Fairtrade chocolates - yum! We also learnt about the Fairtrade logo and used it on our own chocolate boxes
Melody, the enrichment manager from Warren Lodge Care Home, visited today to talk to us about dementia. The children asked interesting questions and were really engaged throughout her session. This will really help us when we visit the residents at Warren Lodge as parts of our community engagement.
Our active learning on parts of a river was enjoyed by all in the playground. We now know terms such as source ,mouth, delta,estuary, riverbed, riverbank, tributary, channel, waterfall and meander.
We were lucky enough to enjoy some impromptu learning today about honey and how it's harvested. Thanks to a lovely school family ☺️
Dear Parents and Carers,
We are delighted to welcome you and your children to Chaffinch Class for the new academic year. As their class teachers, we are very excited about the new term and look forward to meeting the children and supporting their learning journey.
Our main topic for this term is Rivers. During our lessons, we will explore the water cycle, understand where water comes from, learn how rivers are formed, and study the various stages of a river's development. As part of our practical learning, we will also be visiting the River Pang in West Berkshire to observe and experience these concepts first hand.
Detailed information about the subjects we will be covering, as well as home learning activities—including requirements for reading, spelling, and Maths homework for each year group—can be found on the Chaffinch class page of the school website. We explored pneumatic systems in Design Technology and then used them to make our animals move. They are all animals found in our locality. Can you identify them?
Rosefinch worked hard to create their pirate treasure chests. The end result was fantastic. It took a lot of willpower not to taste test the ingredients on the way!

Rosefinch Class had a fantastic time during their learning event, where they decorated their own gingerbread men with icing and sprinkles, showcasing their creativity. The Barley Barn was filled with excitement as each child added their unique touch. Afterwards, they came together to sing a cheerful song in the hall, making it a cheerfula fun event for all.
Rosefinch Class have been truly inspired by the story of the Gingerbread Man. They have created wonderful drawings of the mischievous character, bringing him to life with vibrant colours and imaginative details. The class also wrote their own creative pieces about his adventures, showcasing their storytelling skills and enthusiasm. It's been fantastic to see their ideas sparked by this classic tale!
Welcome to Rosefinch Class. We are Reception and Year 1 and we LOVE to learn! We are always busy and enjoy exploring the world around us through active learning and play.

Exploring our world...learning through play! In Reception and Year 1 we explore and learn through accessing our environment alongside our friends and teachers.
Spring has sprung! We have been enjoying using our outdoor area over the last few weeks and have been exploring our topic of Space through building rockets, space stations and more!
Christingle 2023. We learned all about Christingles and each made one. We enjoyed making them alongside some of our Year 6 buddies but enjoyed the best bit more...getting to eat them!

Our art was inspired by Andy Goldsworthy - we enjoyed creating our own sculptures outside.
We are starting a unit on instructions, so we had a go at making jam sandwiches. We soon realised how clear instructions need to be to get it just right!

Science work was great fun today as we tried to guess whose baby photo belonged to who! We thought about how our bodies have changed as we've grown.
